Yesterday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec), together with its media partners GMA Network and Philippine Daily Inquirer, hosted the first Philippine presidential debate for the upcoming 2016 elections held at the Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City. The debate was participated by five presidentiables namely Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Senator Grace Poe, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, and Manuel “Mar” Roxas.
The presidential debate was divided into three rounds. In the first round, the candidates were asked about their performance and their track record, while on the second round focuses on the poverty issue in the Philippines. For the last part, the debate tackled about the current problems in Mindanao region.
During the last round, Rodrigo Duterte criticized the “Daang Matuwid” program of Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas after the latter claimed that Mindanao is much progressive today than it was 12 years ago during the administrations of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Joseph “Erap” Estrada.
Mar Roxas also said that the funds given to Mindanao were doubled for the development of the region. He added that there are still a lot of work to do and this is also one of the reasons why “Daang Matuwid” should be continued.
“Habang totoo na napag-iwanan ang Mindanao, hindi na po ‘yan ang nangyayari ngayon… P260 billion pesos ang dumating sa Mindanao itong nakaraang 5 taon kumpara sa 125 billion noong 12 taon ni Gloria at ni Erap,” said Mar Roxas.
However, Mayor Duterte blasted “Daang Matuwid” saying that, “Wala akong nakitang tuwid na daan, puro kulubot lang ‘yan.”
The Davao City Mayor said that the most of the funds were still given to the Luzon region instead of Mindanao and some of them went to corrupt officials.
“You know, I said this year the budget was given to Manila, the largest portion it received was 64 percent. Ang binigay sa Region 11, P19 million (only). How can you expect Mindanao to develop? You do not count the funds during the last five years. Naubos sa corruption,” he said.
Mar Roxas and Rodrigo were the two biggest rivals vying for the top position in the country. In their past interviews, the candidates were heard exchanging ugly words against each other.

Philippines could be one of the most progressive and even richest countries in the world if Filipinos will only choose the right leader. Don’t waste your votes for those undeserving candidates, but choose the one who is more than willing to serve the country.
